The Invitation,

Big Question? What's so great about having a baby?

Tasks

Students will brainstorm ways that having a baby has changed their lives.

Students will write a one page essay of their own "case story"

Students will gather information on teen-age pregnancy risks, both to the mother and to the baby. information can be gathered through guest speakers, (i.e. March of Dimes), field trips, (i.e. Developmental preschool atht eh Children's Village, and the neonatal ward of the hospital.

Students will analyze statistics about teen pregnancy drop-out rates and determine job availability based on limited education.

Through reading, listening, and interviewing, students will increase their understanding of how welfare reform impacts their life.

Mothers will have a greater nderstanding of what the father gives up in terms of career goals, etc to support his child. And his responsibility to do so.

Students will develop a survey with inquiries as to why parents had their children.

Students will determine the costs of having a child until the age of 18.

Situations

Students will work on this project in class, unsing classroom computers as well as library computers on an availability basis. Students will invite a variety of speakers that will enhance their knowledge of this topic.

Interactions

Students will work as a group. This group will be students from the Teen parenting Class. They will work through listening, discussing, and taking notesas they proceed.

Tools

Students will use the following tools and resources in research in preparing for this project:: paper, poencils, library books, video tapes, pamphlets, video recorder, camera, internet, computer, software, community resources (speakers, library, hospitals, DSHS)

Assesments

Students will accomplish this task when the following steps have been completed:

Take notes on speakers, video, field trips, and written material

Develop a survey to use as a tool in determining why people have children

Draw conclusions as to why teenagers continue to get pregnant in this day and age of birth control availability.

Develop a computer multimedia presentation showing how having a baby changes a teenagers life. these presentations will be used in other teachers classrooms as an addition to teens, "Telling their story." This presentation should include facutal information in the form of text, video - possibly their own child or that of a child observed in this lesson, pictures

Present the project for peer review along with an evaluative survey designed by the students.
