Animal alphabet book for grades 1 and 2
The Big Question?
Can you walk through the alphabet with your favorite animal?
Task: The students will research mammals, finding their favorite animal. They will match that animal with the first letter of the animal, thus creating an animal alphabet book.
Situations: Most of the work will be done in the classroom using alphabet books, animal encyclopedias and previous experience of visiting zoos and viewing television.
Interactions: The students will first look in various books, magazines to determine which animal they want to research. They will then answer some questions about the animal, such as, where do they live, what do they eat, what do they look like? The students will share their research with classmates and draw and color their animal.
Tools: The students will first research their animals, writing facts, and then drawing their picture. The information that they have found will be converted to rhyming sentences and then converted to text for each page in the alphabet book. The students will also scan their pictures into the computer to be linked with the appropriate page as well as record their own voices reading the text for their page.
Assessment: The student will be assessed on following directions, sentence formation and punctuation.
They will be expected to write one or two sentences, rhyme those sentences, put in correct
