Fireworks Activities

Introduction
Creating a New Document

1. Start Fireworks and you will see the following window

Select a width and height that will work for the image you wish to work with. Most web page headers will be 800 pixels wide.

Resolution should be set at 72 pixels per inch. If you plan on printing this artwork you should select at least 300 pixels per inch.

White is good to work with as a canvas color.

2. Once your document opens be sure that your magnification size is set at 100% like the following image:

Properties menu
The properties menu will allow you to make changes to any selected item on the canvas. Clicking on an object with the pointer tool will select it and outline it with a blue line.

Tools Menu

The Toolbar - along the left hand margin you will see the menu shown here. Here is brief description of some of the items.

Select
Pointer - used to select canvas contents
Sub-selection tool - used for editing paths and points.
Scale tool - used to change the size and orientation of an image
Crop tool - used to crop the entire canvas, also contains the export tool

Bitmap
Selection tool - used to select items to copy
Lasso tools - used to select specific items
Magic wand tool - used to select areas
Pencil tool - used to make simple lines on the canvas
Brush tool - used to apply colors or textures
Eraser tool - used to erase bitmapped images

Vector
Line tool - used for creating straight lines
Pen tool - used to create and edit paths and points.
Polygon tool - used to create squares, circles and polygons.
Text tool - used for entering and editing text.

Colors
Color Picker tool - used to select a color.
Fill tool - used to fill bitmap areas with color.
