Meet the Author WebQuest

Introduction:

You have an opportunity to invite any children’s author to our school for a Meet the Author Day at Whitney. Who will you invite?

Task:

Students will work in groups of 3 for this project. Each group will determine which author they would like to invite to Meet the Author Day at Whitney Elementary. This author must appeal to 2nd – 5th grade students.

Process:

Step # 1: Examine books by each author located on the round table.

Step # 2:  Locate Mrs. Helms’ Library Website in favorites and find the table labeled Meet the Author.

Step # 3:  Carefully examine at least 5 of the author’s websites and determine in your group which author would provide the most interest to all students at Whitney Elementary.

Step # 4: Complete the student evaluation rubrics for at least 3 author websites.

Step # 5: In your group select the one author you would like to invite. Become familiar with their website and write a one paragraph (3 – 5 sentences) on why we should select this author.

Step # 6: Each group will have 3- 5 minutes to present to the group their selection. Show highlights of that author’s website and read your paragraph to the audience.

Evaluation:

Your group will be evaluated as to your presentation and paragraph using the Meet the Author evaluation rubric.

Conclusion:

Congratulations on the completion of your web quest. Unfortunately unless Whitney receives a huge grant or a fairy godmother appears, we do not have sufficient funds to really invite this author. Instead I invite all of you to read books by your choice of author and present book talks to our library class.

Teacher Notes:

Continue to include additional author links to your website for more authors.
