Birds of the Lowland Pacific Northwest
| Introduction | Land Birds | Home | |
Birds are the most visible of wild animals and can be found in all habitats in our region. During breeding season many species perch in prominent locations and sing to attract mates and advertise territory boundaries, making them easy to find and watch. During the winter months our local waterways host thousands of waterfowl who migrate back north or east in the spring. During April and May, resident birds are joined by migrants and many stay to nest and raise young. Birds eat a variety of foods, although during nesting season they focus on high protein insects to feed the young. |

| There are several hundred kinds of birds found in our region and while some are distinctive and obvious, others confound even experts. The birds chosen here are the most common and easy to identify and little effort has been taken to discriminate difficult to identify species. The land birds are organized here by relative size and coloration rather than by family. Once you become familiar with the common and locally abundant species in our region check the references pages for recommended bird field guides. | |||
